As the experience of talking to users of Windows 7 showed, not everyone knows how to create and apply system restore point, present instruction is written for those people.

To create a restore point you need to open the systems properties panel - Control Panel → System and Security System → System Protection → Create... in the dialog box enter the name of the point(date and time are automatically stamped), after the tool has done creating just press "Close" button.

Control Panel Home
System Properties System Protection
System Protection Create a restore point
System Properties System Protection 2

In order to restore the system to the desired point in time, you must use another tool - the Control Panel → Recovery → Run the System Restore Wizard then click "Next" and in the list select the desired point, then again click "Next" and after making sure of selected item click "Finish".

Control Panel Recovery
Recovery Open System Restore
Restore system files and settings
System Restore
Confirm your restore point

The system will return to the desired point in time. In the same window, you can learn about what programs and drivers would be removed as a result of the recovery, and which ones will not be affected by the recovery.
